Every Child Seen, Every School Supported

A statewide initiative connecting Texas optometrists and school nurses to make sure every child who needs vision care gets it.

The Texas Optometric Association is launching a new Adopt-a-School Program to close the gap between vision screenings and follow-up care for Texas students. Too many kids fail their school vision screening and never receive the care they need. This program pairs local optometrists with schools in their community to change that.

HOW IT WORKS

Optometrists

adopt 1–3 local schools and serve as the school’s go-to vision resource — assisting with state-mandated screenings, helping connect students to follow-up care, and supporting school nurses throughout the year.

School Nurses

tell us where support is needed most. We’ll use your responses to match you with a local OD who can help your school complete screenings and ensure students get the care they need.

FOR OPTOMETRISTS

Adopt a School in Your Community

We’re looking for optometrists willing to adopt 1–3 schools in their community. Most schools can complete screenings in just 1–2 days with volunteer support.

Why get involved?
  • Help school nurses complete state-mandated vision screenings at the elementary level (Grades 1, 3, and 5)
  • Improve access to eye care for children who fail screenings
  • Build relationships with local schools and families
    Support advocacy efforts by identifying gaps in access to care across Texas

We’re building a library of local and statewide resources to help connect families and students with vision care support in their community, including low-cost exams, donated glasses, and follow-up care options.

Many Texans struggle because they can’t afford to see a specialist or don’t have access to one nearby, but also can’t afford to suffer with worsening eye disease as they try to work, drive, and care for their families.
